All too often we forget or make light of the cost of love; the cost of sacrifice in loving others, whoever they might be. This entry spoke deeply to me as one of my co-seminary friends was on this very trip and was present with Dr. Laniak and co-horts when the knife did not work. She intimately shared in his pain in a way that her understanding of the cost of the cross was forever transformed. As he writes “to give life to others, we give of our own life.†Ministry comes with a cost, wherever and whatever it looks like. We live in a world that so little values or understands the cost of love. We run from suffering. We run from sacrifice. May we so honor God in the way we live out our own lives in self-giving and sacrifice. Are we willing to be living sacrifices? Are we willing to lay down and die for those we love and serve? Do we embrace the reality that "leading means bleeding" in our churches, our communities, and even in our families? _________________ Rev. Leslie S. Dibble |
