"biblical restoration involves returning to a place of divine provision where comprehensive care is available and where life can be restored." What a beautiful description of the rest that God gives, and what should be the frequent experience of people in our churches. So much in our culture militates against rest and restoration - busyness and material accumulation, the quest for fulfillment and not missing any opportunity.
I am sure that my own workaholic tendencies have at times been mirrored in my church, where we have sought to do too many good things. God forgive me. I see it a bit more clearly now that I am out of that role. And yet, I know that the pressure of the culture will keep people running even if the church doesn't, which of course is no reason to keep them running in the church. But rather we need to seek after that rest that God gives (Heb 4:11), and to help people identify the inner and outer pressures that resist resting in God. |
