Mark’s masterful weaving of the themes of shepherd, exodus, and wilderness is indeed awe-inspiring. I had not seen the motif of artos (bread) as clearly as Laniak through Mark 6-8. A defining mark of the relationship between the Shepherd and his flock is the Shepherd’s provision of bread, both physical and spiritual. In the same way, if we feed off the bread of the world, we declare ourselves to follow a different shepherd.
