Shepherding as an Internship

by pastorcarterrob » Sat Oct 25, 2014 5:16 pm

Being a shepherd as preparation for leadership. The internship that God had planned for so many of His leaders of His people. Why was shepherding the best leadership training that God chose for so many of the leaders of His chosen people?

Preparation for ministry today. How do we pastors today prepare for ministry? Do seminaries prepare us like God prepared His chosen leaders of His chosen people? The three year process with the PCUSA from inquirer, to candidate, to prepared to take a call, to a pastor. Does that give a pastor the same experience or a modern day equivalent of shepherding?

How many years shepherding makes a good leader? 40 Years for Moses. Youth and young adulthood for David. Does 3 years in seminary give us enough time to be ready, give us the time to be patient enough to be a leader of the church? Fortunately God can work in our lives before we go to seminary and God can work through out our entire lives preparing us for ministry. God can use whatever we are doing to prepare us to be his “shepherd leaders. Since shepherding like they did in the middle east is just not available to us today, God uses methods available today to train us to be the people he is calling us to be. Maybe that is the heart of an internship today… letting God use wherever we are to prepare us for who He has planned for us. Maybe it is even when God uses what we consider to be the most menial jobs today to prepare people to be His leaders.
