What Keeps Us From Rest

Post by jmabus »

Rest: “Rest is not only a function of being well provided for. It is a state of security that comes from the shepherd’s protective presence (55). This is a powerful reminder for all of us in ministry who struggle with the concept of rest and sabbath. The footnote is especially important as it references the four factors that keep sheep from lying down in a sense of security: fear; tension from strife in the flock; aggravation by pests; and hunger. These are good reminders to analyze our own roadblocks to rest. It could be our unexamined fears, relational tension with our own family, our family of origin, or those we minister, the distorted thinking and messages that deceive us and drain the passion from our hearts, or our sense of emptiness and thirst for a more intimate experience with God himself. If we are struggling to find a rested spirit and resting space, maybe we should take time to examine what agitates and aggravates as an invitation to lean more fully into the shepherd's provision and protection.
