Perhaps I should have known better but I finally understand why God was so angry with Moses when he struck the rock for water the second time around. I simply took the passage to mean that Moses did not listen to God's direction. But I now understand through this excerpt that this action of Moses stole God's glory because Moses used "an old shepherd's trick, and God was not honored as the source of water." Can you say "epiphany?"

In many ways, I feel like these journal entries are confession sessions because I again have to confess that I do exactly what Moses did on a regular basis in my ministry context. My greatest weakness is self-reliance. I too often rely on my experience, cultural understanding, biblical and practical knowledge to do ministry. I don't spend nearly enough time in prayer, seeking God's counsel and waiting upon His timing. I verbally say that God's is in our ministry but truth be told, I'm the one who is using slight of hand, tricks of the trade to get things done. However, at the end of the day, by doing this I am stealing from God's glory.

It is scary to think about how God views my leadership.
