There was no doubt that God chose first two kings, Saul and David, because of their obedient attitudes as shepherd. Even though the author did not mention it, when Saul received the oracle to be a king, he was also finding his father’s donkey. It shows that God was interested in the professional ethics of shepherds long ago. And the author says that the most important virtue of shepherds is to acknowledge who has the ownership of the animals. Shepherds should live far from the village. So, owners chose the most credible and obedient people as shepherds. Through these shepherds’ characteristics, pastors have to realize that humans and material resources of the church belong to God.
