The shepherd’s comprehensive task

Post by bsantosa »

Laniak describes the shepherd’s task by using the terms “protection, provision, and guidance. With these tasks, a shepherd must be ready to do everything for the needs of the sheep. Even, a good shepherd must be willing to give his life for the sheep. That is why, first of all a good shepherd must be touched in his life by God’s love. Then, in God’s grace he is enabled to protect, provide, and guide the sheep with his love, and compassion so that all the sheep’s needs are fulfilled. Thus they feel protected and safe. As a pastor I realize that these tasks are very comprehensive. I was struck by the enormity of the shepherd’s job. So I need God’s strength, love and wisdom to guide the sheep. I cannot depend on my own knowledge, or even on my own experiences but I need His power and wisdom. Laniak reminds us, “A good shepherd is one who sees what the Owner sees and does what the Owner does? Surely, it is not easy to see and do what the Owner sees and does because we tend to see and does what we see and do according to our own understanding.
