I appreciated Timothy Laniak's reflection on Plato's Republic on p. 73 where he states: "Socrates argued that the essence of a shepherd's art is selfless concern for his flock; otherwise he is no shepherd at all." As a shepherd/leader you must make sure your sheep/people have food, water, protection, and all their needs met. As a leader, you need to make sure the people who are your sheep (who are following you) are prospering and are taken care of, and not be focused on yourself. If your focus as a leader is on yourself, this is disgraceful and you will not last long as a leader as the people following you will pick up on your self-centeredness and stop following you.
